TRICARE Young Adult

TRICARE Young Adult

The Affordable Care Act, popularly known as “Obamacare”, extended eligibility for family health care plans to dependent children up to the age of 26.  TRICARE Young Adult was created to provide military families with coverage consistent with the new federal law.

Eligibility for TRICARE Young Adult

TRICARE Young Adult is available to dependent adult children who no longer qualify under a different TRICARE program because they have “aged out” of eligibility to be covered.  A dependent child ages out of normal TRICARE coverage at 21 years of age, or at 23 years of age if they remain a full-time student after 21.  In addition, the Young Adult beneficiary must be unmarried and not covered by an employer-provided health plan.

More importantly, the beneficiary must be an adult dependent of a qualifying sponsor.  If the sponsor is a member of the National Guard or Reserve who has not been activated or has retired, then that sponsor must be enrolled in TRICARE Reserve Select or TRICARE Retired Reserve in order for their dependent child to qualify for TRICARE Young Adult.

Coverage and Enrollment for TRICARE Young Adult

TRICARE Young Adult is available in Prime or Standard coverage plans, and will offer coverage based on those models.  However, TRICARE Young Adult beneficiaries are not eligible to enroll in TRICARE Dental as a supplement to their Prime or Standard Coverage.

Unlike TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Standard, eligible dependents will pay a monthly premium which will be adjusted annually.

Visit www.tricare.mil/TYA for details regarding monthly premiums and copayments.  Copayments will vary according to the plan selected and the sponsor’s rank and status.

How do we stop Congress from continuously increasing the cost of Tricare Young Adult? The cost is absurd compared to non-retired military citizens utilizing their insurance for their young adult children.
